I was driving my wife's B6 Passat wagon today and I noticed that there's a distinct "step" in the throttle. Like when I floored it to pass someone who pulled out in front of me, there was a distinct point near full throttle where it took significantly more effort to push down. As a matter of fact, I thought I had it floored many times before and I may not have been pushing hard enough. Anyone know what this is?
(That picture is the car right after we got it.)

Not that it helps, but my mom's volvo is the same way.

I have it in my merc too. Is it an automatic?
Because if yes, its a feature in a couple of German cars to reassure that you don't accidentally goes full throttle, without you knowing it.

I think the VW company actually calls that a PassatL.

6-speed Tiptronic. Shame it isn't the DSG. It already feels faster than a 15.5 1/4 mile and 7 seconds to 60.

It acts as a little dividing line between "hard acceleration" and ALL THE ACCELERATION. Basically it makes the transmission a little more aggressive, if memory serves. It may also open the throttle a bit more.

Nissan's have this as well. I've experienced it a ton of times in rentals.

I have the same car and never noticed that. Mind you, I basically never get to drive anywhere without the family, so WOT pretty much never happens. Next time I'm alone, maybe I'll remember to try it out...
I drove a Mercedes w/an automatic once that had it, and when you pressed past the "step" it would hold the transmission in gear until the very end of time - basically, I had to ease off a bit for fear of it never shifting up and instead, grenading the motor (or perhaps, just bouncing off the rev limiter).

In the VW, it holds it until redline at ~6500 rpm and then shifts hard

My B5 Passat also had that. I miss it in my new car. I can't yell "warpspeed!" when I punch it anymore.
